The Humanities Welfare and Social Development Initiative (HUWESDI) Africa has praised the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) under the leadership of Mr. Mele Kyari, describing him as a “very dynamic and productive leader”.
Speaking at a joint press conference organized by a coalition of civil societies, Stanley Amaziro, convener of the conference, stated, “As a civil society organization, we will not stand idly by and watch the assassination of Mr. Mele Kyari’s character, especially in the face of controversies surrounding the oversight functions of the ad-hoc committee of the National Assembly.” He assured that HUWESDI Africa will always prioritize patriotism and solidarity for Nigeria.
The group highlighted the achievements of NNPC under Mr. Kyari’s leadership, including:
1. Publication of monthly financial and operational reports
2. Publication of audited financial statements
3. Passage of the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021
4. Ajekuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project
5. Rehabilitation and upgrades of system 2B facilities and Atlas-Cove depot optimization project
6. Rehabilitation of NNPC Towers
7. Upgrade of five NNPC jetties to international ship and port facility security (ISPS) code
8. Remodeling and completion of the uncompleted four-story research, technology, and innovation (RTI) building in Abuja
HUWESDI Africa emphasized the need for Nigerians and civil society groups to support the NNPC and the oil industry, promoting public awareness and understanding of the sector’s stakeholders and mandates to reduce conflicts, misinformation, and incitements.
Additionally, the group acknowledged NNPC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives under Mr. Kyari’s leadership, including:
1. Construction and rehabilitation of 21 federal roads (RITCS)
2. Maiduguri emergency power project
3. Construction of hospitals under Frontier Exploration Services (FES) corporate social responsibility for Upper Benue Trough
4. Resolution of disputes around oil blocks to boost production (OML 25 & OML 125)
HUWESDI Africa commended Mr. Kyari and the NNPC for their dedication to transparency, accountability, and nation-building.
