Editorial: The Merit Deficit—Dismantling Nepotism for a Resilient Nigeria

In the quiet corridors of Nigeria’s public institutions, a silent thief is at work. It does not steal gold or oil; it steals the future of the Nigerian youth. This thief is nepotism. While it often wears the mask of “helping a brother” or “protecting our own,” its consequences are devastatingly visible: a crippling brain drain as our brightest minds flee to lands that value competence, and a profound erosion of public trust in the very institutions meant to serve the common good.

Nepotism is not merely a moral failing; it is a national security threat and an economic bottleneck. In the Nigerian and broader African context, the “who you know” culture has effectively institutionalized mediocrity, sidelining skilled individuals in favor of those with connections. This creates a vicious cycle of inequality where resources are diverted to a privileged few, leaving the majority to grapple with substandard service delivery and shrinking opportunities.

The Humanitarian and Welfare Systems Development Initiative (HUWESDI) recognizes that to build a Nigeria where merit, fairness, and accountability thrive, we must confront this challenge head-on. This conference is a call to action—a platform to transition from a “connection-based” society to a “competence-based” nation.
