ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Humanities Welfare and Social Development Initiative (HUWESDI), a prominent non-governmental organization dedicated to community advancement, has rolled out a comprehensive, multi-layered initiative aimed at tackling the rising menace of drug abuse and illicit substance consumption among Nigerian youths. With a strategic focus on the North East region an area heavily impacted by socio-economic challenges—the campaign seeks to rescue a generation slipping into the clutches of substance dependency.
Operating under its core mandate of societal preservation, HUWESDI’s framework combines high-impact public advocacy, community awareness walks, and grassroots sensitization programs. Under the leadership of Country Director Mr. Felix Attah, the organization is approaching the crisis not just as a criminal justice issue, but as a public health and human capacity emergency.
Beyond warning youths about the dangers of addiction, the initiative incorporates human capacity rehabilitation projects. These projects are designed to provide psychological support, life skills, and vocational training to recovering individuals, ensuring they can seamlessly reintegrate into the workforce and contribute positively to the economy.
“Our teeming youth population represents Nigeria’s greatest asset, but illicit substances are eating away at that potential, particularly in the North East,” says Mr. Felix Attah. “HUWESDI is committed to standing in the gap using advocacy to prevent exposure, and structured rehabilitation to rebuild lives from the ground up.”
Through this sustained program, HUWESDI continues to deploy field workers and counselors across local communities, holding town halls and institutional visitations to break the cycle of addiction and restore social stability.
